Shropshire music school lays down sofa2stage challenge to wannabe rock stars

A Shropshire rock music school has set a challenge for new students wishing to join its first term of 2020, which begins on 15 January.

Backbeat Music School, which currently operates from venues in Market Drayton, Shrewsbury and Wem and is open to people of all abilities in the age groups seven to 12, 13 to 18 and 18 to 90 years old, has launched its Sofa2Stage initiative.

Co-founder Adam Knight explains: “Having taught 60 students last term, which culminated in a pre-Christmas concert in Shrewsbury for the adults, we are looking to progress, while at the same time encourage absolute beginners to take that leap into playing rock music live. Sofa2Stage will aim to take complete novices from their sofas where nothing is happening to a stage, in ten weeks. They will perform eight songs at an end-of-term gig supporting the advanced adult group. There must be people in the county who dream of being on the stage rather than sitting and watching music on the TV. May be there’s a new year’s resolution to fulfil or they are in need of a confidence boost or simply want to make some new friends and have a load of fun along the way.”

Dawn Edwards, who joined the school at the beginning of the first term in September 2019, has really enjoyed her experience so far. She said: “Fabulous, friendly guys, sharing their knowledge and love of music with keen amateurs, have helped us build our confidence while having a laugh. The best!”
